JUST A THOUGHT:

Not so long ago pharmaceutical companies gained the right to air advertisements about their products to the public via network television. Before these companies began selling their cures to the television audience, many of the illnesses that the drugs treat were tabooed or shrouded in mystery, unacknowledged, people didn't talk about them.

Folks weren't discussing depression, impudence, and poor bladder control prior to that time, least not where I come from. These degrading and painful ailments, along with others I haven't mentioned, are, for some, just the facts of life. Previous generations just learned to live with, we have grown soft I guess. Demanding even, we have the right to be free!(we say).

The ads that we now see displayed through-out all forms of media, act both as educational and introductory statements that bring awareness to the symptoms and effects of ailments which are owned by many people. Although these ads leave us with many unanswered questions, they act as a sounding board, opening up the subject illnesses for discussion.

Where there are questions there are answers and when we have the answers there is awareness. I for one, am facing my own mental illness and depression differently. I have begun to accept, acknowledge, and work with it, instead of around it. The ads, for example, tell us directly that: depression is more common than not,. Other examples? You don't have to live with the embarrassment of sexual 'im'porformance, and poor bladder control is a part of growing older. Essentially, everything can be cured at a cost(they say).

Perhaps these companies have given us something more important than a treatment. I believed they have given us a license to talk about the unspeakables. I believe they have provided the public at large with an introduction to the difficulties of living with such illnesses. I am beginning to feel a bit liberated about my own limitations. I am becoming more comfortable living in my own skin. The wrath of my debilitating depression has loosened it's grasp upon me and in so doing, I have becoming more capable of living.

This site, however, is not meant to be an open book of what ails me. It is not about the illness really, it is about what can be done with it. And so...I will attempt to share that which I previously considered private. My therapy is, after all, just artwork and should be held up for simple viewing.

And so let me say once again, Welcome to LIVING IN THE BLUE.
